Women’s Works

The Old Courthouse Arts Center 32nd Anniversary Exhibition of Women's Works continues to bring international art and culture to the Northwest communities

The Old Courthouse Arts Center celebrates its 32nd Anniversary of Women's Works, an international exhibition honoring women in the arts. We are very excited that this year's show includes 110 works by artists from as far away as the Middle East, Europe, Canada and beyond.

The first Women's Works exhibit started in 1988 to honor women in the arts during women's history month by the original founders, local artists; Lynn Carlson, Nan Seidler, Alice White, Doris Gallagher and Jeanine Hill-Soldner. Past notable judges of Women's Works included American feminist artist, Judy Chicago who founded the first feminist art program in the United States; Beate Minkovski, co-founder of Woman Made Gallery in Chicago; and Karen Stahlecker, local printmaker, paper artist featured in the Smithsonian collection.

This year's exhibit is being judged by Chicago based artist, Ginny Sykes. Ginny works in painting, installation, performance and video. Her practice is informed by feminism as a resistance to institutional and prescriptive classifications of a universalized female experience. She has created over 40 public arts projects, including On the Wings of Water at Chicago O'Hare Airport, and Rora, an interpretive history of the Chicago River, which received an honor award from the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. For more information about Ginny and to see samples of her work, please visit her website at https://ginnysykes.com

Please join us for the opening reception, Saturday, March 9th from 6-9 pm. You can meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, view the artwork and this year's winning pieces.

Opening night will feature a musical performance by Lisa Zane and Rafael Vivanco, the duo portion of The Lisa Zane Classical and World Music Ensemble of Chicago, who will perform guitar and vocal selections from Europe and The Americas; French chansons, Argentinian tangos, Mexican ballads, and beyond. Vivanco is a classical guitarist specializing in Spanish music from the Baroque era forward, and Ms. Zane is an actress and torch balladeer in five languages. Their vast repertoire casts a spell both familiar and exotic.

Women's Works will be on display from March 6th to April 13th during gallery hours: Wednesday - Sunday, 11 am - 5pm.
